Texas A&M football has kept an edge in the 2019 recruiting class from start to finish. The Aggies are poised to secure the best class in the state on National Signing Day.

What a difference a year makes. In 2018 Jimbo Fisher had just stepped foot on campus and had to work from behind to secure a Top 25 recruiting class for Texas A&M. With a year under his belt, Texas the Aggies hold the No. 3 class in the nation, far surpassing the rest of the state.

National Signing Day is Wednesday, February 6. Here’s how each of the FBS programs in the state of Texas stack up in the final weeks before the big day, broken down by national rank, total commits and blue chip (4- and 5-star commits):

  1. Texas A&M: (National Rank – No. 3), 25 commits (15 blue chip)
  2. Texas: (No. 8), 23 commits (14)
  3. TCU: (No. 31) 24 (3)
  4. Baylor: (No. 37), 23 (2)
  5. Texas Tech: (No. 59), 16  (0)
  6. SMU: (No. 61), 20 (0)
  7. North Texas: (No. 64), 23 (0)
  8. Houston: (No. 92), 12 (0)
  9. UTSA: (No. 100), 16 (0)
  10. Rice: (No. 103), 18 (0)
  11. Texas State: (No. 125), 12 (0)
  12. UTEP: (No. 130), 9 (0)

As is to be expected, the Power 5 programs lead the charge with the two biggest moneymakers, Texas A&M and Texas, firmly fixed inside the Top 10. The difference between the Aggies’ and the Longhorns’ class, though, is the top-end talent. The number of blue chip recruits is roughly equivalent (Texas A&M has 15, Texas has 14), but the Aggies have dominated the Longhorns in state.

Per the 247 Sports rankings, Texas A&M has commitments from seven of the state’s top 20 players. Texas has three; the same number of top commits as Oklahoma and one more than Alabama who sits two states to the east. No other in-state program has a commitment from A top 30 player in Texas.

Even with a strong finish, Texas won’t catch Texas A&M on the recruiting front this year. The Aggies and head coach Jimbo Fisher have taken over. And if the early 2020 results are any indication (Texas A&M is No. 7, Texas is No. 22), they aren’t going anywhere soon.
