10 former college football standouts who’ll impact American Alliance of Football
8. Denard Robinson, ATH, Atlanta Legends
Former Michigan quarterback Denard Robinson made headlines not only for his impressive on-field abilities but also for his superstitious oddities –– such as wearing two gloves and not tying the laces on his shoes.
Robinson was a preemptive dual-threat quarterback. As a Wolverine, he amassed 6,250 passings yards and 49 passing touchdowns and 4,495 rushing yards and 42 touchdowns. He holds the single-season program record for most total yards (through passing and rushing combined) as a quarterback.
Despite this impressive measures, Robinson’s play was often plagued by inconsistency in the passing game –– with 39 career interceptions, just 10 less than his total number of touchdown passes.
As a result, he was pinned as more of a wide receiver prospect in the NFL as opposed to the quarterback position which he commanded in college.
Although he transitioned away from being a quarterback in the NFL, Robinson was relatively successful in professional football playing for the Jacksonville Jaguars after being selected by the team in the fifth round of the 2013 draft.
Robinson’s career NFL numbers include more than 1,000 rushing yards and five touchdowns, but his NFL career was cut short after being out of a job by 2016.
Unlike some of the other players on this list who were more recent college players, Robinson’s last season at Michigan dates back to 2012. At 28, he still can make strides to return to the NFL, but he is years older than his counterparts.
On the Legends roster, he is listed as a running back and given that his prior NFL statistics point to more rushing yards than receiving yards, perhaps there is a future for his return to the NFL along the lines of being a running back/kick returner.
