Ole Miss Football: 3 Things Rebels must fix before 2019
By Shelbie Warr
For the first time in two seasons, Ole Miss football will play for a postseason berth in 2019. Before they get there, the Rebels have three important things to fix.
The Ole Miss Rebels have had quite a tumultuous last few years. The shadows of the Hugh Freeze saga are finally starting to wane, but the impact on the programs remains significant. Those distractions have played a role in the degree to which this team has struggled the last two seasons.
In 2018, the team finished 5-6 with all of one conference win. That one win? Arkansas- one of the worst teams in the nation this season. They weren’t able to compete for a bowl because of a self-imposed ban, but they sure didn’t earn one. The question now is this, what all does this team have to do to be successful in 2019?
3. No more off-field distractions
Off the field distractions have become the norm at Ole Miss. A number of NCAA violations caused various issues for the Rebels Athletic Department.
The NCAA went back and forth on exactly how to punish Ole Miss, but ultimately voted to cut back scholarships, allow the upcoming seniors to transfer without penalty. In 2019, that saga officially closes its cover. That will no longer be a stamp on this program in the eyes of the NCAA and they will be able to move forward.
So, my first fix is this. Ole Miss needs to be thankful for the clean slate they now have and refrain from creating any more off the field issues for themselves that could distract them from the task at hand, which is putting together a strong campaign for the 2019 season.
