Ole Miss Football: Top 5 remaining targets for 2019 National Signing Day
National Signing Day is approaching and Ole Miss football is zeroing in on a few remaining targets. Who sits atop the Rebels’ target list?
Having that “interim” tag removed from Matt Luke’s head coaching label can only help the program in the recruiting landscape because these kids will actually trust who they’ll be playing for without expect any surprises.
Luke had a decent first year as head coach in 2017, going 6-6, but took a step back in 2018 with a 5-7 record and the bowl ban didn’t much matter since the Rebels wouldn’t have been eligible anyway.
There are high expectations for Luke’s third year, and he’ll have to manage those without star quarterback Jordan Ta’amu who has exhausted his eligibility and Shea Patterson has since transferred to Michigan where he started every game in 2018.
Could the next star quarterback be in the 2019 recruiting class or will the Rebels be more focused on other positions with Matt Corral ready to star under center?
Ole Miss is still in play for some of the 2019 class’ top targets.
You can never have too many good defensive backs. That seems to be the motto that head coach Matt Luke has been working with in his 2019 recruiting class as he currently has six cornerbacks and safeties committed and/or signed.
That’s not stopping him from working on more, such as four-star safety Cortez Andrews from Tallahassee, Fla.
Though he’s a bit undersized for a safety, standing just 5-foot-11.5 and weighing 205 pounds, Andrews is a physical player who would fit right in with the SEC. And it looks like he’ll be headed to the SEC regardless as Georgia and Alabama are also in the running for him.
Ole Miss will have a tough battle ahead as it’s hard to say no to Georgia and Alabama seeing as they’ve dominated the conference over the past few years, but the Rebels might give him the best opportunity to play right away.
Andrews is listed as the No. 352 overall player and 29th-best safety in the 2019 class, per 247Sports.
