3. A winning conference record

After a 10-win 2016 and an 11-win 2017, no one was expecting the disaster that befell USC football this past season. The five-win season was accompanied by a 4-5 record in conference- including a loss to UCLA. They also lost a “revenge game” of sorts against Texas in an embarrassing fashion. That’s just disappointing.

To keep his job Clay Helton has to win in the Pac-12. This used to be USC’s world that the rest of us were just living in. In 2018 though, the script flipped and even though no one really “owned” the Pac-12 as the conference itself struggled, USC hit a new low that no one thought possible. In 2019, a conference title would for sure save his job, but a winning record would at the very least be a good start.

It is important to note that there isn’t much that the Pac-12 has to boast about heading into 2019. Could Washington and Washington State be just as good as they were before? Probably not, and that leaves a hole for a team to emerge as the front runner in the conference. Could that team be USC? It would go a long way to save Helton’s job if the answer to that question is yes.
