1. This team needs a decent bowl game.

The prior two seasons under Clay Helton saw a Pac 12 Championship as well a victory in the Rose Bowl and a loss in the Cotton Bowl. Win or lose though, this team at the very least made it to a New Years Six matchup two years running and that means something for sure. This past season? The team had a measly 5-7 record and didn’t even make it to a bottom of the barrel bowl game, much less a New Years Six berth.

This point, to me, summarizes this entire article. Clay Helton has to have a successful 2019 and to do that he has to earn a decent bowl game. To earn one of those, a win against UCLA is necessary as is a strong home record and a winning conference record. Figuring out the offense is definitely an important part of getting to a bowl game as well. I don’t want to say that a New Years Six berth is required to save Helton’s job, but at this point, it might be.

The question now is this, is USC capable of that kind of turn around? Can they go from being a five-win team to a double-digit win team? That’s a tall task, one that Helton hasn’t given any indication he’s capable or rising to meet. But after all, that’s why they play the games. Good luck Mr. Helton, you’re going to need it.
