Missouri Football: NCAA ruling puts Kelly Bryant’s future in question
Missouri football surprised many when they landed former Clemson quarterback Kelly Bryant as a transfer. The latest NCAA sanctions might stop Bryant from every playing a down for Mizzou.
Kelly Bryant’s departure from Clemson appeared to be looming from the time lauded high school passer Trevor Lawrence signed with the Tigers. It was clear after the true freshman set foot on campus he was special, ultimately leading head coach Dabo Swinney to turn to Lawrence as his QB1 and open the door for Bryant to transfer.
Bryant had months to make his decision, ultimately opting to play for offensive coordinator Derek Dooley at Missouri. The potential successor to Drew Lock, Bryant would have one year to study under an offensive mind and make necessary preparations for what he hoped would become a promising NFL career.
Those dreams have been put on hold, for now. Following the release of a report by the NCAA, Missouri football will not be eligible for postseason play following the 2019 season. In addition to sanctions against other Missouri sports, the NCAA Committee on Infractions dropped this bombshell:
Bryant, a graduate transfer, falls under this recommendation. This means Bryant has a decision to make. If development and preparations for the NFL are his modus operandi, Bryant might decide to stay put after all. The allure of taking the Jalen Hurts route and transferring to a contender might prove too much to pass over.
Head coach Barry Odom is in a tough spot. So is Bryant. There will be a long line of Power 5 teams jumping at the opportunity to bring him to their school. A question which appeared to have a clear-cut answer so recently has been blown wide open. Where will Kelly Bryant play in 2019? It’s quite possible even he doesn’t know.
