Team speed is one area Nebraska football head football coach Scott Frost has worked to improve since taking over. Demaryion Houston brings that to the Huskers.
Houston, a four-star recruit out of Oklahoma’s Millwood High School program, signed with Nebraska during National Signing Day over Texas. According to Omaha.com, he brings exceptional speed with him after clocking a 10.71 100-meter dash time.
Not an overly-physical receiver, Houston had 35 catches for 772 yards and 11 touchdowns as a senior at Millwood, averaging just over 22 yards per reception. He is one of a handful of signees to the receiving group for the Huskers and Frost, but you can never have too much speed.
After breaking from his commitment to Texas late last year, Houston made an official visit to Minnesota and one to Nebraska, opting to not take trips to Penn State or Colorado. Nebraska offered him a scholarship last March.
Houston is regarded as a Top-10 recruit out of the state of Oklahoma and ranked just outside the Top-300 nationally by 247Sports. His high school coach, Darwin Franklin, believes he can line himself up either outside or in the slot with the Huskers.
“One thing Demariyon has said to us many times over and over again is he wants to be a better man after football and football is not the only deciding factor for him,” Franklin said. “He wants to make sure he’s around great men to make him a better man later on.”
Talented quarterback Adrian Martinez had himself a breakout freshman campaign under Frost. Martinez had a 1,000-yard receiver in Stanley Morgan Jr. and another second option in JD Spielman, who had just over 800 yards. Morgan is moving on, which should clear the No. 1 role for Spielman, who his spot up for grabs.
Houston just might have the kind of breakaway speed needed to slide right in and become a big-play threat in the receiving game for Nebraska. Last year, Morgan averaged over 14 yards per catch and Spielman 12, a mark Houston should be able to surpass with regular playing time.
