Notre Dame football landed one of the top defensive ends in the 2019 class as Isaiah Foskey has signed with the Irish. What can we expect?

When Mike Elko left Notre Dame for Texas A&M, Irish fans were worried that the defense would take a step back. However, Clark Lea did a fantastic job in his first year as defensive coordinator in 2018, helping the Irish reach the College Football Playoff.

Defense will be a strength for Notre Dame once again as 2019 approaches, especially after landing a blue-chip recruit like four-star defensive end Isaiah Foskey.

The Concord, Calif., native is ranked the No. 203 overall recruit and 13th-best weak-side defensive end in the 2019 class, according to 247Sports, as the Irish beat out teams like Utah and Michigan for his services. He could have stayed closer to home, but chose to play for a rising defensive coordinator like Lea and a team fresh off a playoff appearance.

Word on the street is that he’s been committed since December and just made it official on National Signing Day, so that’s great news for the Irish.

Foskey could see the field right away with his 6-foot-4, 233-pound athletic frame. He’s quick off the edge and can get to opposing quarterbacks in a hurry. He’s strong, but could afford to add more strength so he can completely overpower opposing linemen.

Expect to see him in the regular rotation right away in 2019, playing behind guys like Khalid Kareem, Daelin Hayes and Julian Okwara. Don’t be surprised if he plays well enough to earn a starting spot by his sophomore season — this kid is that good.
