Quarterbacks

Could this be the season the quarterback questions are finally and emphatically put to rest? If this conversation were to mercifully end, one of the current signal callers needs to break out of the game-manager mold and become a true game-changer. Dan Mullen’s quarterbacks have always taken huge steps after their first season in his system, and Florida’s College Football Playoff hopes depend on one of their quarterbacks doing just that.

Starting quarterback: Feleipe Franks
Backups: Emory Jones, Kyle Trask, Jalon Jones

Unless Emory Jones makes a dramatic leap forward leading up to the 2019 season, Feleipe Franks will be Florida’s starting quarterback for the third consecutive opener. Franks remained inconsistent at times in 2018, but he unquestionably progressed into a better quarterback and even flashed as a playmaker in the final four games of the season.

If he can improve his decision making, accuracy and ball security and learn to ignore the noise of fan expectations, Franks could transform from a liability into a special player.

Jones will likely become the primary backup if he can’t supplant Franks as the starter even if Kyle Trask is fully healthy. Jones will appear as a change-of-pace option just as he did during the 2018 season. Freshly signed four-star quarterback Jalon Jones is expected to redshirt in 2019.
