2019 NFL Draft: Top 10 Quarterback prospects, ranked
7. Gardner Minshew –– Washington State
Gardner Minshew was mostly an unknown heading into the 2018 season, but he certainly opened a lot of eyes for putting up massive numbers in his lone season at Washington State.
While rocking a vintage-style mustache and a tank top during warmups, Minshew evolved into a darkhorse Heisman candidate as the season progressed before his subpar performance against Washington in the Apple Cup.
Nonetheless, he became a more notable draft prospect mostly because of what he was able to do in 2018 as he threw for 4,776 yards and 38 touchdowns. As impressive as those numbers are, he did all of it while completing nearly 71 percent of his passes.
He exhibits a lot of patience in the pocket. Typically, he doesn’t rush his throws. Instead, he reads the defense, goes through his progressions and makes a well-calculated decision.
Minshew’s delivery on his throws are not only precise, but they look smooth and refined. Even when he is forced to step outside the pocket, he can still make an accurate throw.
Ultimately, he makes for a sleeper pick because of how he is so consistent in putting the ball where only the receiver can get it –– in 2018 he only yielded nine giveaways on an astonishing 662 passing attempts.
Minshew, commanding an air raid offense, was never cheated on his in-game attempts. If anything, this makes his accuracy even more apparent.
Upsides: Accuracy, Patience, good footwork, delivers a smooth pass targeting a receiver in the right spot
Downsides: Has mobility but isn’t the fastest, downfield passing wasn’t showcased all that much in college
