NFL Draft 2019: Top 10 bust-proof prospects entering NFL combine
By Shelbie Warr
Yet another guy who struggled with injury, Ed Oliver is still one of the best defensive tackles that we have seen in quite a long time. He became the first underclassman to win the Outland Trophy in 2017 and was the first Houston player to earn first-team all-conference honors three times.
For his career, he finished with 193 tackles, including 54 for loss and 13.5 sacks in 33 games. He also had 14 pass breakups, forced six fumbles, had one fumble recovery and blocked a kick.
“Just watch the combine. I’m going to surprise a lot of people. You’re going to be impressed, I’ll just say that,” Oliver said during a recent autograph session. That kind of cockiness has become commonplace for Oliver, but he has always backed it up with his play style and his talent.
Oliver has drawn comparisons to the NFL Defensive Player of the Year: Aaron Donald. That is great company to keep let me tell you that much. ESPN Analyst Mel Kiper Jr. has quite a bit to say about the guy he has going anywhere from No. 14 to the later picks of the first round. He believes that Oliver has one of the fastest first steps off the ball he’s ever seen from a defensive tackle.
