Wisconsin Football: 5 potential transfer destinations for Alex Hornibrook
5. Penn State Nittany Lions
Penn State is set to replace record-setting quarterback Trace McSorley who exhausted his eligibility after last season. McSorley leaves big shoes to fill after leaving Happy Valley as the most prolific passer in Nittany Lion history.
McSorley is Penn State’s all time leader in passing yards, passing touchdowns, total offense, total touchdowns, and a host of others. He also won more games behind center than any other Penn State quarterback in the history of the program. Replacing him will not be easy.
His likely replacement is already on campus, with rising senior Tommy Stevens finally set to take the reins after serving as his understudy for several seasons. Stevens has been a factor as a runner and a receiver as well as serving as the Nittany Lions’ backup quarterback, and figures to bring to the table a lot of what the team lost with McSorley.
The problem could be his issues staying healthy, which could lead to James Franklin searching for another experienced signal-caller to add to his quarterback room as Penn State looks to push for Big Ten supremacy.
Rising sophomore Sean Clifford and redshirt freshman Will Lewis add some quality depth, but neither have much in the way of in-game experience.
Hornibrook, a Pennsylvania native, could come in and push Stevens for the staring job while in the very least providing experienced depth in case of injury. This would allow him to finish his graduate degree closer to home, while also potentially playing for an elite team.
The issue with Penn State’s involvement with Hornibrook is that it would be an uphill battle for him to secure a starting role, something that is likely important to him as he seeks out where he will spend his final season of eligibility.
