Florida Football: Definitive all-time 2-deep Gators depth chart
Defensive Line
Starting defensive ends: Jack Youngblood, Alex Brown
Backup: Kevin Carter
Only two Florida players have ever been inducted into both the College Football Hall of Fame and Pro Football Hall of Fame – defensive end Jack Youngblood stands as one of those players. Youngblood set Florida’s single-season sack record in 1969 with 14 and a year later secured a position as a First-Team All-American. When Gator fans muse over the five names in the Florida Ring of Honor, they’ll find Youngblood’s name.
Though Youngblood holds the title of greatest defensive linemen in program history, Alex Brown’s career makes him a close second. Brown holds the record for most career sacks in Gator history with 33 and fell only one sack short of Youngblood’s single-season sack record recording 13 quarterback take-downs in 2000. Named to two First-Team All-American teams, Brown remains the only defensive end in Gator history to receive the honor twice. Additionally, Brown was named the SEC Defensive Player of the Year in his senior season.
As a vital member of three SEC Championship-winning teams, Kevin Carter was inducted into the University of Florida Athletic Hall of Fame in 2004 and named to the Florida Gator All-Century Team in 2000. Carter finished his Gator career with 21.5 sacks.
Starting defensive tackles: Brad Culpepper, Ellis Johnson
Backup: David Galloway
Brad Culpepper was a Florida Gator standout both on and off the field. While wearing the orange and blue, Culpepper terrorized opposing running backs and quarterbacks finishing his career with 47.5 tackles for loss and 18 quarterback sacks. In addition to being named a First-Team All-American after his senior season, Culpepper was also awarded the formerly-named Draddy Trophy for “his academic success, football performance and exemplary community leadership.”
Named a “Gator Great” in 2007, Ellis Johnson captained the 1994 SEC Championship team, was named First-Team All-SEC and an All-American honorable mention. He finished his career with 16 quarterback sacks and 26 tackles for loss.
David Galloway is another worthy addition to the Gator all-time roster. Galloway helped lead the Gators back to respectability in 1980 following the embarrassment that was the winless 1979 season. Galloway achieved First-Team All-American and All-SEC status in 1981.
