2019 NFL Draft: 10 players trending up after NFL Combine
Concerns over his size had some pundits dropping Michigan’s Devin Bush down draft boards, but he should have alleviated those concerns at the combine, particularly in comparison to the draft’s top linebacker prospect, Devin White, who has seen no such concerns:
White: 6-foot, 237 pounds
Bush: 5-foot-11, 234 pounds
The rest of their measurables are almost identical, and both are insane athletes. Bush ran the 40 in 4.44 seconds and led all linebackers with a 40.5 inch vertical. Both players are a bit undersized in comparison to the traditional middle linebackers of yesteryear, but they’re both the evolution of the position, molded to combat the ever-increasing infatuation with the spread.
Bush is an instinctive playmaker who always seems to gravitate to where the ball is. He flies all over the field, with the speed to move sideline-to-sideline. He has the ability to impact the game as the occasional third-down edge rusher, and can drop back into coverage when called upon.
Bush clinched a spot in the first round barring something unforeseen between now and the draft. I don’t think he’ll challenge White for the top spot on the board at linebacker, but he’s going to make a team very happy as a consolation prize.
If he’s available when the Steelers are on the clock at No. 20, I have a hard time thinking they will pass on him with a need for a rangy, play-making linebacker like him.
