2019 NFL Draft: Projected First Round after NFL Combine
Alabama’s Quinnen Williams solidified his spot in the Top 5 with a monster performance at the combine. The All-American ran a blazing 4.84 40-yard dash on Sunday, which was the fourth fastest time by a player over 300 pounds in the history of the event.
Williams’ strong performance in Indianapolis came as little surprise as his numbers confirmed what everyone could see on tape; he’s a special talent who could have an impact as an interior pass rusher akin to what Aaron Donald has done for the Rams and Fletcher Cox to the Eagles.
Williams was a relative unknown heading into 2018 as a rotational player on the Crimson Tide’s defensive line. He replaced a first round pick in last season’s draft, Da’Ron Payne, and put together a completely dominant season. The Outland Trophy winner was arguably the best player in college football, amassing 19.5 tackles-for-loss and eight sacks as a redshirt sophomore.
Williams is quick off the snap, using that initial burst to immediately get into the backfield to make plays against the run or affect the quarterback. He has the potential to be an All-Pro player at the next level, and I don’t think the Jets will pass on him if he’s available; don’t be surprised if he is very much in the mix for the No. 1 overall pick.
If he isn’t available, or if New York decides to pass, then they would likely target one of the draft’s top pass rushers. They would be salivating if Bosa fell to this spot, and would also likely consider Kentucky’s Josh Allen, Michigan’s Rashan Gary, and Mississippi State’s Montez Sweat with this selection.
I think the Jets might be a likely contender to trade down from this spot as well, with several teams likely interested in moving up the board.
