Miami Football: Quarterback Cade Weldon leaving program
By Dana Becker
Cade Weldon has announced an amicable split between himself and Miami football, as the redshirt freshman will see a new home to continue his career.
A former standout at Tampa’s Thomas Jefferson High School, Weldon saw playing time in four games this past season, completing 2 of 3 passes for 14 yards with two carries for five yards and a score.
In a release, the school said “The University of Miami announced Monday that quarterback Cade Weldon has decided to leave the football program,” with new head coach Manny Diaz adding “Cade and I talked, and we decided that it was in his best interests to pursue opportunities at another school. We wish him all the best in his future plans.”
The news should bode well in regards to the status of Tate Martell, the former Ohio State quarterback who transferred to Miami after Justin Fields enrolled at Ohio State. Martell is seeking immediate eligibility to play this fall for the Hurricanes.
Weldon offered his own thoughts on the decision via Twitter, posting “First off I’d like to thank the University of Miami and all the Coaches for giving me an opportunity. The friendships I’ve made the past two years will last a lifetime.
“With that being said, I will be transferring from the University of Miami and entering the portal. I’m thankful for the memories I have made here and I’m excited for what the future holds.”
Weldon, who is 6-foot-3, held offers from Kentucky, South Carolina, Wake Forest and others coming out of high school after recovering from a knee injury suffered his junior season. He was a three-star prospect after throwing for 3,135 yards and 19 touchdowns, adding another 368 yards and one score on the ground.
His father, Casey Weldon, was the 1991 Heisman Trophy runner-up at Florida State where Mark Richt, the recently-retired Miami head coach, served as his offensive coordinator.
With the exit of Weldon, the current group of Miami quarterbacks listed on the roster include sophomore N’Kosi Perry, junior Carson Proctor, redshirt freshmen Jarren Williams and Ryan Rizk, sophomore Augie DeBiase and Martell.
