Texas Football: 5 spring 2019 breakout candidates
I’ve been on the Keaontay Ingram bandwagon ever since the beginning of last season when the Longhorns were looking for a starting running back.
Texas brought in Cal-transfer Tre Watson who played a good amount in his first year with the program and led the team in rushing, but now that he’s exhausted his eligibility, the keys to the backfield have to be in Ingram’s hands.
Sure, he had a mini-breakout as a freshman, rushing for 708 yards and three touchdowns on 5.0 yards per carry, but he’s only scratching the surface. Ingram has all the talent to get to that next level and become one of the best running backs in the Big 12, and it all starts this spring.
After the 2018 season ended with a Sugar Bowl win, Ingram set a goal for himself to gain some good weight and he’s done just that, adding 10-12 pounds. Tom Herman has even stated that Ingram has been one of the biggest surprises this spring.
It seems as if he’s dedicated to taking that next step and that’s good news for the Longhorns who have had plenty of talented backs over the years, but need a true No. 1 in 2019.
