2019 NFL Mock Draft: Quarterbacks rising in first round of NFL Draft
By Phil Poling
The Jacksonville Jaguars threw only 15 touchdown passes in 2018, the second-fewest total in the NFL. Some of that blame falls on the quarterback, but it can also be attributed to the wide receivers. And that’s why drafting Ole Miss’ D.K. Metcalf at No. 7 is a likely move.
At 6-foot-3 and 228 pounds, Metcalf’s size is an obvious issue for defenders. But sprinkle in his 4.33 40-yard dash time, and the former Rebel could blossom into an absolute juggernaut at wide receiver.
Injuries held Metcalf back at Ole Miss, forcing him to miss chunks of two separate seasons, one to a broken foot (2016) and one to a neck injury (2018). He still compiled 67 career receptions for 1,228 yards and 14 touchdowns in 21 career games.
Metcalf might not have been the best wide receiver on his team at Ole Miss, but he still projects to be a WR1 at the next level. The league has changed, with smaller guys like Antonio Brown and Odell Beckham, Jr. flourishing, but team’s still covet the Julio Jones’ and Calvin Johnson’s of the world. With the right tutelage, Metcalf could one day be mentioned among them.
