It would be easy to peg someone like Ian Book as a guy who is trending up after the spring game on the offensive side of the ball because he looked like he’s taken that next step, but we’re going with a more under-the-radar option.

Sophomore running back Jahmir Smith may have just played himself into the No. 2 running back role behind Jafar Armstrong with a strong game.

Many believed Tony Jones Jr. would be the guy to give Armstrong a run for his money as the No. 1 back, replacing Dexter Williams, but Smith made his case on Saturday afternoon. He rushed for 56 yards on just eight carries and had three receptions for 36 yards — he totaled two touchdowns.

Brian Kelly has called him a “truck” at 5-11 and 205 pounds as he’s not afraid to run you over and that style will never get old. He could be one of those under-the-radar stars for the Irish in 2019.

It’s hard to believe he’s just a sophomore and rushed for only 28 yards on six carries as a true freshman.
