Georgia Football: 5 things to watch in 2019 G-Day game
4. Developing depth at WR
The spring has been fruitful for Georgia’s wide receiving depth, which was one of the major concerns entering spring practice.
The Bulldogs lost Terry Godwin to graduation and both Riley Ridley and Mecole Hardman to early entry to the NFL Draft. That left a dearth of experience at the position, but there’s certainly a number of talented players still on the roster, with quite a bit of help coming in the summer still.
In the summer, Georgia will add Miami graduate transfer Lawrence Cager and four-star Dominick Blaylock. They might also add five-star George Pickens, the nation’s No. 1 WR in the 2019 class, if he can qualify academically.
Entering the spring, junior Jeremiah Holloman and senior Tyler Simmons were looked at as the top two receivers on the roster. Both Holloman and Simmons have an experience edge over the others on the roster, and both should contribute heavily to the Georgia offense next season.
A key player that Smart wanted to see take a big step is Cal transfer Demetris Robertson, a former blue-chip recruit who was a freshman All-American with the Golden Bears in 2017. He didn’t make much of an impact last season in Athens, failing to catch a single pass, but he flashed his explosiveness with four rushing attempts that totaled 109 yards.
By all accounts, Robertson has taken a step forward this spring. He seems to have a firmer grasp on the playbook, and has shown an ability to make an impact from the outside or the slot. He should be a major weapon for Georgia’s offense in 2019.
A pair of redshirt freshmen – Kearis Jackson and Tommy Bush – are also looking to make a move up the depth chart. They’ve both had a great opportunity to make an impression on the coaching staff ahead of the talented receivers joining the team during the summer.
