Penn State football’s Tommy Stevens has entered the transfer portal. Where might he play in 2019 if he decides to officially move on?

After flirting with transferring last year, Penn State quarterback Tommy Stevens has entered the transfer portal after the conclusion of spring practice in State College.

Stevens is entering his senior season, with one final opportunity to play quarterback at the collegiate level. Stevens spent the last several years as Trace McSorley’s backup, and spent much of this spring dealing with an injury that limited his reps. In the meantime, redshirt sophomore Sean Clifford took the majority of the reps with the first team, and Stevens might see the writing on the wall that he has fallen behind in the competition to win the starting job.

Stevens would be immediately eligible at whichever school he may choose to transfer to, taking advantage of the graduate transfer rule that allows players to transfer without sitting out a year after completing their undergraduate requirements.

Stevens is a versatile player who could be a major upgrade for a number of teams as a dual-threat quarterback. He only threw 41 passes over the last three years with the Nittany Lions, but he rushed for 506 yards on 6.7 yards-per-carry and caught 14 passes for 62 yards.

Of course, it should be noted that just because Stevens has elected to enter the portal doesn’t necessarily mean he’s going to transfer. We’ve seen players come out of the portal before. This just allows him to weigh his options as he ponders what to do with his final season of eligibility.

He wants the opportunity to play quarterback, and he will most certainly generate interest from other programs.

There’s a number of teams who will undoubtedly be lining up to pitch Stevens on a transfer after assessing their own quarterback rooms throughout spring practice.

If Stevens chooses to remain in the portal and ultimately move on as a graduate student, these five teams would make a lot of sense.
