4. Fresno State

With only three scholarship quarterbacks currently on the roster, Fresno State head coach Jeff Tedford has made it well known that he would be open to adding a player or two to his quarterback room between now and the beginning of fall camp.

Tedford and the Bulldogs are no strangers to transfer quarterbacks late in the process. Marcus McMaryion joined Fresno during fall camp in 2017 and quickly earned the starting gig. McMaryion put together two impressive seasons under Tedford’s direction, helping guide the Bulldogs to a 12-2 season last year and a Mountain West title.

Senior Jorge Reyna is the favorite to land the job, attempting to hold off a pair of redshirt freshmen – Steven Comstock and Ben Wooldridge. None of the three quarterbacks have been particularly impressive during the spring, so the allure of adding a veteran like Stevens could lead Tedford to an aggressive recruiting pitch.

Along with rising junior Ronnie Rivers, adding Stevens could give the Bulldogs a devastating backfield tandem that could effectively run the read-option and RPO game.

Joining forces with a coach of Tedford’s pedigree working with quarterbacks could be particularly intriguing for Stevens as he hopes to make an NFL impression in his final year in college. Tedford has groomed many future NFL quarterbacks, including Aaron Rodgers, Joey Harrington, David Carr, and Trent Dilfer.

The relationship between Stevens and Fresno State could be mutually beneficial. Tedford could help develop Stevens as a passer, and the Penn State transfer could be the missing ingredient for the Bulldogs to grab another Mountain West title and seriously compete in the group-of-five’s race for an automatic bid into the New Year’s Six.
