With Alex Smith nursing a broken leg, the Washington Redskins found their long-term NFL draft pick solution in Dwayne Haskins.
This team went out and got Alex Smith from the Chiefs and things seemed to be looking up at least a little bit for the NFC East contenders until the unimaginable happened and Alex Smith broke his leg. Oh yeah, and then Colt McCoy also injured his leg and was out for the rest of the season in December.
Overall, it was an injury filled mess for the Redskins in 2018 and they needed a quarterback in this draft for the now and for the future. The answer for that issue was absolutely Dwayne Haskins- a guy that was surprisingly still available for the 15th pick on Thursday night.
They got their quarterback without having to trade up, and that is a big deal for sure. He is not the best runner, but he does it well enough and his passing abilities heavily outweigh his lack of mobile ability. He does however struggle when under pressure and there is quite a bit of pressure on the defenses that he will face in the NFC East year in and year out. He is inconsistent in terms of his deep passes, despite a strong arm.
Overall this is a B+ selection. Yes, they got the quarterback that they needed. Yes, he is a strong passer and will definitely fight hard with Case Keenum this offseason for that starting spot, but he won’t be the best quarterback in the NFC East and that could be a problem for the Redskins. They get points for making a better decision than the New York Giants though.
