NFL Draft 2019: Titans get steal at No. 19 in Jeffery Simmons
The Tennessee Titans got one of the steals of the 2019 NFL Draft in Mississippi State defensive lineman Jeffery Simmons. How does the pick grade?
Although Montez Sweat may have been the talk of the town surrounding Mississippi State’s defensive line, Jeffery Simmons flew under the radar as a value pick.
The Tennessee Titans made a smart selection at No. 19, picking the defensive lineman out of Mississippi State after a strong three-year career.
Tennessee’s defensive line could definitely use some help and Simmons is a guy who could come in and be a dark-horse contender for Defensive Rookie of the Year. I’ve been high on this kid despite his off-field issues and he’s going to grow exponentially in Tennessee.
Simmons finished his Mississippi State career with 33 tackles for loss and only seven sacks but he was a monster in the middle, recording 163 total tackles. He was a tough guard for opposing linemen, standing 6-4 and weighing in at 300 pounds. He has what it takes to make that instant impact up front and will be a rookie to keep an eye on in 2019.
In my opinion, this is one of the steals of the draft as Simmons has a knack for getting into the backfield and causing havoc on the ball-carrier. His 18 tackles for loss as a junior was huge for Mississippi State’s defense and he was a menace in the SEC.
I’m going to give this pick a solid grade because I think the ceiling for Simmons is incredibly high. Will he be as good as I project?
Grade: B+
