The NCAA is at it again. Virginia Tech football’s Brock Hoffman’s waiver has been denied despite transferring for his sick mother.

Waivers have been granted for immediate eligibility by the NCAA in recent years for minor reasons. Not for a serious reason such as Virginia Tech’s Brock Hoffman.

Didn’t win a starting job and decided to go somewhere that you could play extensively? Granted. Didn’t like your coach? Granted. Wanted to play for a winner? Granted.

Have a sick mother and want to move close to home to be near her while you play college football? Denied.

The NCAA has botched the transfer waiver claim of immediate eligibility for Hoffman whose mother just had a brain tumor removed because it claimed she was getting better and he’s just five miles outside of the limit of 100 to be considered “close to home”.

Hoffman, a Coastal Carolina transfer, decided to pick Virginia Tech because it was close to home and he would be able to help his mother out who has suffered facial paralysis, hearing loss and eyesight problems, which are all permanent.

The NCAA denied his request, showing that it doesn’t truly care about those who need to transfer, but rather players who want to (ex: Justin Fields, Tate Martell, Shea Patterson).

Embarrassing doesn’t even begin to describe this situation. Now that it has denied Hoffman and has shown no remorse for his mother’s situation, it looks like an entity that only cares about its star players and not those who don’t earn it a ton of money and viewers.

If this was a player the caliber of Tua Tagovailoa, you can bet the waiver would have been granted almost immediately. Heck, the NCAA may have granted it on the spot.

This needs to be fixed, and soon. The NCAA is continuing to embarrass itself and Hoffman is suffering because of it.
