2019 NFL Draft: 5 biggest snubs after the first round
Only one cornerback heard their name called on the opening night of the NFL Draft and that was Georgia’s Deandre Baker, who was behind Murphy on most big boards heading into the draft.
Murphy seemed like a near lock in the first round after a strong redshirt sophomore season at Washington. Many pundits actually had him as the No. 1 corner on their big boards, but he’ll now slip to day two.
Murphy had an outstanding 2018 season with the Huskies, showing his ball-hawking and instinctual ability to attack the football. He has a really good football I.Q. and isn’t afraid to stick his nose in and help against the run. He seems like an ideal slot corner from the jump, with the upside to one day move to the outside and be a shutdown player on one side of the field.
Murphy didn’t test off the charts at the combine, and his mediocre numbers seem to have cost him a first round selection. His upside is still high, though, and it was a surprise that someone late on day one didn’t pull the trigger on him.
Murphy shouldn’t have to wait too much longer on day two as plenty of teams picking early on in the second round have needs at defensive back and should look at him as outstanding value. It also wouldn’t be a surprise to see a team try and move up to land him after seeing him fall out of the first round.
