LSU’s Greedy Williams has long been considered the consensus top cornerback in this draft class. If you would have told me before the night started that only one corner would be picked in the first round, I would have bet heavily on Williams being that player.

Instead that distinction went to Georgia’s Deandre Baker, and Greedy Williams will have to spend the night in Nashville pondering his NFL future after a long and unfortunate process in the green room on Thursday night.

Williams’s slippage is surprising given his ceiling. He has the potential to be a lockdown, ball-hawking cornerback at the next level. He picked off six passes as a redshirt freshman in 2017, and while that production was down last season, it had more to do with quarterbacks outright ignoring his side of the field than a step back on his part.

Williams has been criticized for his unwillingness to help out in run support and him taking the occasional play off. He’s been labeled as soft, something that could be concerning NFL teams as they look for physical corners who can withstand the toll of going up against the biggest and most imposing receivers.

It will be interesting to see if there’s a run on corners early on during day two with Williams, Murphy, Temple’s Rock Ya-Sin, and Penn State’s Amani Oruwariye offering excellent value at the top of the second round. There are several teams with needs in the secondary still, and they should all be licking their chops at the thought of getting a talent like Williams in round two.
