NFL Draft 2019: Patriots pick Jarrett Stidham as Tom Brady’s replacement
The Patriots made yet another value pick in former blue-chip quarterback Jarrett Stidham in the fourth round of the 2019 NFL Draft.
The Patriots have done it again. They have been selecting elite talent round after round in the 2019 NFL Draft and they struck gold with former blue-chip dual-threat quarterback Jarrett Stidham in the fourth round.
Stidham was the No. 2 ranked dual-threat quarterback in the 2015 class only behind Kyler Murray who, at the time, chose Texas A&M. Stidham, however, chose Baylor and both eventually transferred.
Throughout his Auburn career, he passed for just shy of 6,000 yards and 36 touchdowns with just 11 interceptions and he completed well over 60 percent of his throws. His accuracy dropped from his sophomore to junior seasons, going from 66 percent to 60 percent. That may be a red flag, but his weapons weren’t as extensive in 2018 as they were in 2017.
Still, this is one of those value picks that will pay off in the long run. They drafted Stidham because they felt like they could get him in the middle rounds, which they did, and groom him to replace Tom Brady.
If he’s not the right guy for the job, there’s not a huge loss to be had because it’s not like he was a first-rounder.
Brady is 41 years old and wants to play until he’s 45, but he realistically has anywhere between 2-3 years left. That leaves 2-3 years for him to teach Stidham and for the young quarterback to soak up all the knowledge Brady has.
This is a great pick by New England and they just keep opening eyes in this draft — N’Keal Harry, Damien Harris and Chase Winovich are examples of other great selections.
