Dexter Williams had to wait until the No. 22 pick of the sixth round to hear his name called, but the Notre Dame football star will reach his potential.

The Packers made one of the more underrated picks of the 2019 NFL Draft and no one is really talking about it — and that’s exactly what Notre Dame’s Dexter Williams wants.

Williams waited patiently for his turn as starter at Notre Dame. He saw running backs before him reach 1,000 yards and he came just five yards shy in 2018, going for 995 yards and 12 touchdowns on 6.3 yards per carry, but he went under-the-radar throughout the draft process.

Why? It’s a valid question because he did average 6.4 yards per carry throughout his career but never showed his ability to be a workhorse back.

Which is why the Packers made a splash by drafting him in the sixth round.

Don’t get me wrong, Green Bay has plenty of talent at the position in Aaron Jones, Jamal Williams and Tra Carson but Williams is the type of dual-threat running back who could rise up that depth chart before the 2019 season. He will be a surprise rookie and could even earn valuable carries by the end of the season.

Williams has that burst that you want to see in a running back and finds holes, hits them hard and can break off long runs — he had a 97-yarder against Virginia Tech this season.

Is he a lead back? Probably not yet, but he’s going to be one of those complementary pieces in the backfield who will see a ton of success with the Packers.

Teams were afraid to take a chance on him, but the Packers will soon benefit from that decision.
