Florida Football: Projected post-spring 2019 depth chart
Quarterbacks
Starting quarterback: Feleipe Franks
Backups: Emory Jones, Kyle Trask
Entering spring, coaches and fans alike publicly discussed their desire for an open quarterback competition.
If the spring game revealed anything, it’s that the competition won’t last into the summer or fall as Feleipe Franks showed that he’s ready to be the undisputed leader of the offense. He was confident. He was in command. He was having fun.
Mullen’s quarterback always benefit from a second-year bump and Franks certainly looks prepared to take full advantage of the confidence Mullen has placed in him. No doubt, it’s a stunning but welcome turnaround for a player who’s fought his way through difficult circumstances.
When fans spoke of a quarterback competition, it was really an unsubtle reference to their hope that Emory Jones would be ready to push Franks for the starting spot. Jones is seemingly tailor-made for Mullen’s system – athletic and mobile. However, with Franks continuing to improve at such a rapid rate, Jones will instead have another year to learn, improve and gain confidence.
Kyle Trask remains accurate and a solid backup option. He adds leadership and will push Franks and Jones to continue to get better. Gator Nation hopes he can stay health in case of an injury.
