Is Jaelen Gill a running back? Well, he was coming out of high school, but that’s what happens at the next level, coaches find positions that fit better and that will get talented players on the field more often.

For Gill, that position change was from running back to H-back in the Ohio State offense. What is an H-back? Well, it’s sort of a hybrid position but he’s more of a pass-catcher than anything else, following in the footsteps of KJ Hill who is set to be a senior at the position.

While Gill isn’t going to start with Hill back — who was second on the team in receiving last year — he’s ready to earn a larger role in the offense. Wide receivers coach Brian Hartline even called Gill one of the most improved players this spring.

Following in the footsteps of Hill will be tough, but he has the talent, as he showcased this spring, capped off by the public scrimmage where he had seven catches for 95 yards. He caught the attention of just about everyone in attendance and he’s poised to break out as a redshirt freshman in 2019.
