Gambling, big games and memorable players: A Saturday Blitz Podcast
By Zach Bigalke
What would it be like to plunk down a bet around the corner from where you’re watching a college championship game? The Saturday Blitz podcast weighs in.
With more and more states embracing the right of individuals to wager on sporting events and codifying that right as a legal construct, the NCAA’s hand was eventually going to be forced. After initially trying to ban hosting national championship competitions in states with sports gambling, the organization washed its hands of the matter yet left themselves appearing as militant in the ever in the process.
That is the first topic of discussion in this week’s episode of the Saturday Blitz Podcast, with a look at the various parties impacted by the move toward hosting championship events in Las Vegas or other gambling havens.
For instance, how might this ruling by the NCAA — when coupled with other recent rulings around grant-in-aid determinants — impact how conferences interact with sportsbooks? How might non-revenue programs utilize legalized gambling to raise their profile and raise their revenues?
As always, we don’t stop with just one topic. Next we look at the upcoming season and some of the games we have circled on our calendars as must-see contests for 2019. We also offer up our opinions on some games that might just be overhyped.
Finally, John and I get personal and spit out some of our favorite players from over the years. As always with such things this is an incomplete list. By all means, we would love to hear from you as to who your favorite players have been over your lifetime of watching college football.
With the long offseason now completely upon us, let’s keep the sport alive through conversation. If we can’t watch football, let’s at least discuss the glorious gridiron game.
