Tom Herman has just received a contract extension that will go through the 2023 season with Texas football, and he deserves every bit of it.

Texas Football has had its fair share of highs and lows in the past decade, but most of their moments have been lows. Long gone are the days of Mack Brown carrying the Longhorns to BCS Bowls and national championship games. There’s a new name in Austin, and it is Tom Herman.

Herman has already bolstered his resume after just two seasons at Texas, going from 7-6 in his first season to 10-4 in his second. The Longhorns’ highest ranking in the AP poll in 2017 was where they started in 2018, and they only got better. Thanks to Sam Ehlinger and company, Texas managed to make it to the Big 12 Championship game.

After demolishing the Georgia Bulldogs, many started to ask if Texas was officially back. We still have some time before we find this out, but one thing is clear: Tom Herman is carrying the Texas Longhorns in the right direction.

Clearly Texas is happy with the trajectory of their program, because they just agreed to a 2-year contract extension that will carry through the 2023 season. In each of those final two seasons on his contract, he will make at least 6.5 million dollars. It’s a lot of money, but Herman has earned it in my opinion.

With West Virginia likely on a decline in 2019, Texas should definitely be one of the two best teams in the Big 12. A lot of their success is because of Tom Herman and his growth of the program. Long contracts are always dangerous for programs, but I have a few reasons why I think Coach Herman deserves the trust through 2023.
