The 2019 season is right around the corner and Utah football proved that it can remain a contender in the Pac-12 after spring practices.
Utah fans are feeling good these days. After a trip to the Pac-12 title game, nearly pulling off an upset over Washington without Tyler Huntley and Zack Moss, the Utes seem to be trending up following a nine-win season.
Kyle Whittingham has a solid team returning and many believe the Utes are the favorites to win the Pac-12 South once again over the likes of USC, UCLA and Arizona State.
Spring ball is in the books and the 2019 season is right around the corner and we’ve gotten more clarity on the Utes’ outlook.
How will the Utes fare in 2019?
The Holy War took place near the end of the 2018 season and BYU nearly pulled off the upset. The Cougars actually looked like they were on their way to a big win over the Pac-12 South champs, but couldn’t put the finishing touches on the game, losing 35-27 in Salt Lake City.
Will the same situation happen in 2019? Well, this rivalry takes place to open the season, which is a bit of a different feel, so the Cougars could take advantage of a Utah team before it gains any momentum. Or it could be the other way around.
I’m going with the former. Utah will get the win, claiming a 14-0 lead after the first quarter and then holding on for the remainder of the game despite BYU’s offense returning Zach Wilson at quarterback for his sophomore year.
The Cougars will make things interesting early in the fourth quarter, pulling within a score, but Utah will answer right back with a 50-yard Zack Moss touchdown.
Final Score: Utah 38, BYU 24 (1-0)
