Alabama defense

Biggest strength: Secondary
Biggest weakness: Inside linebacker

Alabama will be losing a lot of talent on defense, but that’s par for the course in Tuscaloosa. Quinnen Williams was a key to the defense, but there are always defensive linemen ready to fill in for players that leave. Look for DJ Dale, LaBryan Ray, and Phidarian Mathis to make a difference in 2019.

Despite losing Deointe Thompson at free safety, the best unit is easily the secondary. Xavier McKinney played very well to end last season, and the Tide will get Trevon Diggs back from injury. You also have Patrick Surtain, who will become a better player in his second season. Josh Jobe will see his role increase as he grows in his sophomore season. Also, don’t count out Shy Carter to make some moves.

The biggest question mark is Jared Mayden at free safety, but it’s just because he hasn’t had a great chance to prove himself. He might prove to be a top player on this team, but we will have to wait and see.

Inside linebacker depth will certainly be a concern. Dylan Moses will be a stud, but whoever plays alongside him will have to step up. As of right now, Joshua McMillon, Markail Benton and Shane Lee have the inside track. Also look for Ale Kaho to potentially be an X-factor for the unit.

The main reason why I think the defense helps the case of Alabama being the best team in the country is how it will shape up against Clemson. Clemson’s strength is their passing game, which plays into Alabama’s secondary this season. The young guys will have to limit the mental errors that cause for big touchdowns, but they have the potential to be significantly better than last season.
