Texas A&M Football: 3 burning questions for Aggies after spring 2019
By Shelbie Warr
Texas A&M football answered lots of questions during spring ball. With that being said, there are still some remaining to be answered.
As I wrote prior to spring practice even starting, Texas A&M had quite a few questions to answer on all sides of the ball. Now, with the NFL Draft in the books and 14 Aggies (and counting) finding their way to the NFL along with spring football officially being in the books, the time to answer questions is now.
On that note, let’s talk questions that need answers, starting with the quarterback position.
3. Who is the backup quarterback?
Kellen Mond is the starter. Whether he’s the best option or how short his leash should be with the depth of the position is another argument for another day. Right now, we ask this question: Who is the backup quarterback?
After the spring game, Jimbo Fisher said this won’t be answered until the closing of fall camp — likely to prevent transfer — but we all still want to know.
In my opinion, true freshman Zach Calzada is the best and most likely option, based on his spring game performance. He completed 8-of-21 passes, which all in all isn’t great, but he showed some impressive moments and threw a touchdown pass to Baylor Cupp to keep the spring game close — something that no other quarterback not named Mond can say.
Connor Blumrick completed 4-of-12, but was sacked once and just looked uncomfortable on the field. James Foster was 7-for-12, but was sacked twice.
However, that begs the question of how much seniority factors in to Fisher’s decisions. Do you go with veterans Blumrick or Foster? Has Calzada impressed enough to jump over those guys in the depth chart?
