Considered the fastest player on the Cyclones’ roster for 2019, Kene Nwangwu has spent most of his career as a backup and kick return specialist, but with David Montgomery gone, he may finally get his opportunity to shine as the presumed No. 1 back.

Nwangwu finished third on the team with 157 yards on 39 carries a year ago and didn’t really break out, but injuries have held him back from being one of the most explosive players on the team. Now that he’s healthy and coming off one of the best springs of any offensive player, he could finally break through as a crucial piece to the offense’s puzzle.

A true freshman could be pushing him for the starting job, and that seemed to motivate the junior a little more this spring as he showcased his skillset for the coaching staff and fellow teammates.

Senior running back Sheldon Croney had high praise for his teammate, per 247Sports.

"“It’s his first spring really healthy, so I’m really excited for him, I know he’s really excited,” Croney said. “When Kene’s not worried about having injuries or anything like that, he’s a great player. It’s really cool to get to see him finally not worry about injuries and get to have some fun and play football.”"

Since he’s finally healthy, Nwangwu can finally take the reins and prove to everyone just why he’s currently the No. 1 option in the backfield.
