Louisville Football: Can Jawon Pass bounce back in 2019?
Can Jawon Pass bounce back in 2019 after a horrid 2018 season with Louisville football? It all depends on Scott Satterfield’s new offense.
Filling Lamar Jackson’s shoes is not an easy task — just ask Jawon Pass.
The sophomore quarterback was pegged as a guy with plenty of potential under center, but he struggled through the air with lofty expectations in 2019, completing just over 50 percent of his passes for 1,960 yards and eight touchdowns. The worst part? He tossed 12 interceptions.
A 0.66 touchdown-to-interception ration is not exactly what you want to see from your starting quarterback, but the Louisville offense, as a whole, was atrocious.
In fact, the Cardinals ranked No. 122 nationally in points and 109th in total yards per game — both were the worst marks in the ACC. That led to a 2-10 season the firing of Bobby Petrino.
Scott Satterfield has come over from Appalachian State and there’s plenty of chatter about a potential turnaround for pass. However, the new head coach’s offenses usually harp on the run game, even at quarterback. Malik Cunningham may be a better dual-threat option than Pass, but if the Cardinals are going to have an aerial attack, the job will go to the latter.
Sometimes you have to work with what you’ve got, and Satterfield likes what he sees in Pass.
The chances of him winning that starting job are high, but can he turn things around from that horrid sophomore season?
Well, he has the pieces in Dez Fitzpatrick, Chatarius Atwell and Seth Dawkins who each had over 300 yards receiver and at least 25 catches each last season. He has sophomore Hassan Hall behind him at running back to take some pressure off and he could be a rising star in the offense.
The only worry is his accuracy and decision-making. He can sling the ball, but he needs to work on going through his progressions.
Louisville’s offense should be vastly improved under Satterfield and with that, Pass could have a bounce-back junior season and lead the Cardinals back to a bowl game.
The talent is there, but it’s up to Pass to realize his potential and make the offense relevant again.
