Oklahoma football lands game-changing 5-star QB Brock Vandagriff
By Dakota Cox
Oklahoma football is loaded at the quarterback position, and they will continue to be for years to come with 2021 five-star Brock Vandagriff.
Quarterback talent sets the college football landscape. As of right now, the quarterback whisperer is Lincoln Riley, head coach of Oklahoma football. In his two years in charge at OU, he has coached two Heisman Trophy quarterbacks and first-overall NFL Draft picks in Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray. He is set up to continue that greatness with Jalen Hurts and Spencer Rattler, and he has now landed his future star in the 2021 recruiting class in Brock Vandagriff.
Vandagriff is currently the third-ranked pro-style QB in the 2021 class, coming in at No. 19 overall. The prospect is from Georgia, so the Sooners were able to steal this prospect from the Bulldogs. This was made possible by the signing of Shane Beamer, Oklahoma’s new co-offensive coordinator. Beamer was a great recruiter under Kirby Smart at Georgia, so that state might become a pipeline for the Sooners over the next few seasons.
At Oklahoma, Lincoln Riley founded his legacy on the ability to land transfer quarterbacks and develop them into amazing talents. In his first three years as head coach, he will have three different starting quarterbacks, all of whom transferred to OU. In Mayfield and Murray, the player became significantly better under Lincoln Riley. Jalen Hurts is a great player and was able to improve at Alabama, but many expect him to reach a new level with the Sooners.
Despite this, Riley appears to be betting his future on recruiting high school quarterbacks. This doesn’t mean he will never land another quarterback from the transfer portal, but he appears to be set for the next 5-6 years at quarterback, assuming Vandagriff keeps his commitment through his junior and senior years of high school.
If things play out as expected, Oklahoma football fans will be spoiled with a line of secession that includes Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray, Jalen Hurts, two years of Spencer Rattler and two to three years of Vandagriff.
If his 247Sports rating doesn’t improve, Vandagriff will become the third-best quarterback to come through Oklahoma, in terms of rating. If it improves, he has the potential to land in the top-two. Either way, he appears to be the bright future of Oklahoma football.
