College Football: Top 30 skill position players for 2019 season
By Dakota Cox
Georgia always likes to use a stable of backs when at all possible, but this year might be different. D’Andre Swift is one of the best running backs in the country, and this will be his time to shine.
As a freshman, Swift had to work behind Sony Michel and Nick Chubb. As a sophomore, he worked alongside Elijah Holyfield. This year, anyone else who gets touches will clearly be behind him on the depth chart.
Georgia will also have to rely more on the running game this year. They will be without almost all of their receivers. In fact, Swift has the most receptions coming back from last year, and second place is a tight end with 11 catches.
I’m not sure if it’s going to lead to more wins for Georgia, but it will definitely lead to Swift getting more than the 1,049 yards and 10 touchdowns he got on the ground last year.
Having a player as talented as Tee Higgins as the 11th-best skill player in the country shows you just how talented this skill class is in college football. He was the best receiver on one of the best offenses last year in Clemson, and they are projected to somehow do even better in 2019.
Higgins had 12 touchdowns and 936 receiving yards last year. The only reason I’m not putting him higher on the list is because I think his role doesn’t have a lot of room to grow in 2019. Renfrow is gone, but I expect Justyn Ross to become the top target for Trevor Lawrence.
The Tigers also have one of the best backs in the country in Travis Etienne. There simply aren’t enough plays for everyone to eat. I could see Higgins reaching the 1,000-yard mark in 2019, but I don’t see him doing much past that. That’s not a knock on Higgins, because he is truly one of the best receivers in the country. It’s more of a nod to the rest of the talent on offense for Clemson.
