College Football: Top 30 skill position players for 2019 season
By Dakota Cox
Not to be negative, but Cam Akers is probably one of the more disappointing prospects from his recruiting class. He was expected to be a star from the day he stepped onto campus at Florida State, but it hasn’t panned out.
After an injury to the quarterback his freshman year, Akers had to become a bell cow for the team. He got over 1000 yards, but he only reached the end zone eight total times. This is nice, but you would truly like more touchdowns with how many carries he got.
Akers had a bit of a sophomore slump last season, but the potential to be a star is still there. Florida State has struggled, and teams just have to stop Akers to stop the entire offense. If his offensive line can improve, he can maybe get closer to his high ceiling.
The only tight end on my list is Albert Okwuegbunam. Other players will surely emerge as the season goes on, but the Missouri tight end is the top tight end in college football as the season begins.
Drew Lock loved to rely on Okwuegbunam last year, and Kelly Bryant will likely do more of the same. Clemson never really utilizes the tight end position, but Bryant will throw it to anyone who can get him completions. He proved he could do this last season with his 46 catches and six touchdowns.
From a statistical perspective, the tight end had a bit of a sophomore slump. he had plenty of more catches, but his receiving yards per catch and touchdowns dipped significantly. This is presumably because teams got to game plan for him over the summer. We’ll see if he can counter in 2019.
