Appalachian State seems to be the trendy pick for a Group of Five team that will surprise some teams, and this will revolve around the running game. The team has two running backs and a mobile quarterback that lead the offense, and Darrynton Evans is the star among them.

Evans got close to 1200 rushing yards and seven touchdowns on the ground. Although he isn’t the typical threat in the passing game that many teams have at running back, he also added a receiving touchdown. He’s also a tool in special teams, averaging over 30 yards a return on kickoffs and adding another touchdown to his total.

You can credit his success to a lack of competition, but Evans is still a great back for the Mountaineers. He will have to share the backfield with Marcus Williams Jr., but he will still get plenty of highlights this season. Look out for Appalachian State to upset some teams in 2019 behind Evans.

Donovan Peoples-Jones was the best receiver for Michigan last year, but the passing game struggled. People expected Shea Patterson to be a star for the Wolverines, but the team relied mostly on Karan Higdon and the running game. Without Higdon, they will need Patterson and Peoples-Jones to shine in order to beat teams like Notre Dame and Ohio State.

Peoples-Jones had 612 receiving yards with eight touchdowns last year. He’s talented, but he can only do so much on his own. With coaching changes with the offense, maybe the Wolverines can find more way to manufacture touches for him. He is very talented, but I’m not sure if he’s quite reached his full potential just yet.
