College Football: Top 30 skill position players for 2019 season
By Dakota Cox
Last year, Oklahoma was worried when they lost Rodney Anderson for the year. However, Kennedy Brooks emerged as a top running back in his place. He managed to get over 1,000 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns as a freshman. With Jalen Hurts at quarterback, the team might turn more to the running game.
The only issue with Brooks is that he has to share the backfield with Trey Sermon. With the two of them, talent will be at a surplus. However, I expect Brooks to get more carries, and he should eclipse the 1,000-yard mark for the second straight season. If Oklahoma wants to make it back to the College Football Playoff, Brooks will be a valuable asset.
No matter what Devonta Smith does this season, he will always be remembered for his touchdown reception in the National Championship game against Georgia on 2nd-and-26 as a freshman. However, this isn’t his only great play. Smith has the speed and talent to be a top receiver at most programs in the country.
Playing alongside Jerry Jeudy and Henry Ruggs has its advantages. Smith rarely has to worry about top corners in the country since they usually line up against Jeudy. However, Smith does lose targets to the players around him.
One concern with Smith in 2019 is how the emergence of Jaylen Waddle will affect his usage. Waddle is too talented to keep off the field, and he’s going to have to take touches from someone. That someone might end up being Smith. If this happens, it won’t be an insult to Smith — he is still incredibly talented. There’s just too much talent on the offense.
