Matt Luke and Ole Miss football landed a huge commitment from four-star quarterback Robby Ashford. What should fans expect from the 2020 recruit?

It’s amazing what the Ole Miss coaching staff can do when the NCAA isn’t breathing down their necks or has imposed sanctions on the program.

Matt Luke and his staff have been red hot on the recruiting trail in the month of June, and continued that success on Monday with the commitment of four-star quarterback Robby Ashford. He is ranked the No. 7 dual-threat quarterback in the nation by 247Sports and he’ll also play baseball for the Rebels. He’s the 19th verbal pledge for Ole Miss’ 2020 class, 14 of which have committed in June.

Clearly the coaching staff is working overtime, and offensive coordinator Rich Rodriguez has his potential future star at quarterback with Ashford.

The four-star dual-threat hails from Hoover, Ala., and plays at the one and only Hoover High. He plays the best of the best and that should help set him up well to compete against elite competition at the collegiate level in the SEC. Ashford is also currently competing at Nike’s The Opening and is apart of the Elite 11 finals.

Of course, Ashford won’t be expected to come in right away and compete for the starting job. He’ll have time to redshirt and learn the offensive system as Ole Miss currently has redshirt freshman Matt Corral as the starter with three true freshman quarterbacks behind him.

Ashford is the only quarterback the Rebels will take in the 2020 class, which speaks volumes to what the coaching staff thinks of his game.

So what exactly should Rebel fans expect from Ashford?

Expect a quarterback who is raw — he’s only had one season of starting under his belt so far. He has a big arm and is mobile and he can make all the throws on the run as well. Again, he won’t be needed to contribute early, which is good and gives him more time to develop and become acclimated to the college game and he can learn the ropes from Corral.

Ole Miss and offensive coordinator Rich Rodriguez have their QB of the future, time will tell how Ashford’s career plays out but for now, Ole Miss and Ashford look like the perfect match and Rebel fans should be ecstatic.
