College Football: Top 5 transfer QBs who’ll make biggest impacts in 2019
By Brian Miller
1. Jalen Hurts, Senior
Old Team: Alabama
New Team: Oklahoma
Jalen Hurts will now be Lincoln Riley’s third consecutive big name quarterback transfer in as many years and if the first two are any indication of what we might expect to see how of Hurts then we can not only plan on seeing Oklahoma invited back to the four-team playoff but maybe even another invitation to the Heisman Trophy ceremony where the Sooners have won back-to-back.
Based on last season, Oklahoma clearly has some improving to do on defense but the Sooners’ leading tackler is returning and can hopefully pick up where he left off.
Speaking of returning players, running back Kennedy Brooks is coming off a 1,000-yard season last year where he averaged over 8.0 yards a carry. Having a player like Brooks in the same backfield as a dual-threat like Hurts and Trey Sermon will help Oklahoma rack up a ton of yards on the ground. One of the biggest upsides of having an effective rushing attack is being able to then use the play action to get big yardage and as a way of keeping your opponents on their toes.
If there’s one area Oklahoma could be stronger than Jalen’s old Alabama team it at receiver (maybe not in 2019, but in past years). In addition to returning playmakers like CeeDee Lamb and Charleston Rambo, they just signed multiple five-star wide receivers Jadon Hasselwood, Trejan Bridges and Theo Wease.
With a proven winner like Hurts leading the offense, don’t be surprised if you see Oklahoma back in the playoff and maybe even in next year’s title game.
