Replacing Nick Fitzgerald is one of the top priorities for Mississippi State football this season. Who will step up and answer the call?
It’s no secret that the Bulldogs’ passing game struggled at times last year with quarterback Nick Fitzgerald playing his third and final year as the starter.
During Fitzgerald’s career, his passing game was always something he was working on and needing to improve. He ended his career with a total of 6,207 yards passing, 55 passing touchdowns, 30 interceptions and had a completion percentage of 54.
It wasn’t that Fitzgerald was a bad passer, he has a great arm and at times looked like a top SEC quarterback, it was his inconsistent play with his arm that never let hit him take that next step as a quarterback.
However, what Fitzgerald lacked as a passer, he more than made up for as a runner. He rushed for over 1,000 yards twice in his career, and his junior year he barely missed that 1,000-yard mark by just 16 yards. He finished his career with 3,607 rushing yards and 46 rushing touchdowns.
Fitzgerald has moved on and is trying to make it in the NFL with the Buccaneers.
The fan base is looking forward to who will be the next starter under center for the Bulldogs and hoping for improvement in the passing game, but I would be quick to point out that it is never easy replacing a quarterback who accounted for over 100 total touchdowns in his career.
