UCLA Football: Chip Kelly adds big weapon in 4-star WR Matt Sykes
Chip Kelly has added yet another weapon to his UCLA football system, this time in the form of four-star receiver Matt Sykes.
If there was ever a need for added weapons to fit an offensive system, it would be with UCLA football and second-year head coach Chip Kelly.
The former Oregon-turned-NFL head coach has a reputation to uphold and that means helping to develop one of the nation’s most electrifying offenses. He was known for a fast-paced attack while at Oregon and put up 40-plus points on a regular basis, but had a rough first season with the Bruins.
This week, he added another weapon to his future offense in four-star wide out Matt Sykes who may not be the quickest receiver in the recruiting ranks (runs a 4.72 40-yard dash) but he has the size at 6-foot-4 and about 205 pounds and the big-play ability to be a serious down-field threat for the Bruins for years to come.
While his HUDL video is about two years old, it’s impressive, nonetheless. He can go up and make a difficult catch in traffic and make even the most underthrown balls catchable. He has an impressive catch radius and that’s truly a quarterback’s best friend.
Plus, what quarterback wouldn’t want a 6-4 aggressive target in the red zone?
Skyes is ranked the No. 244 overall recruit in the class and the 47th-best receiver, according to 247Sports, and is just the latest college football star to come out of Hawaii.
Kelly may be a couple of years away from truly contending for a Pac-12 title, but he’s off to a good start, especially on the recruiting trail. Sykes will be a go-to target for the Bruins a couple of years from now.
