Best college football coaches of 21st century: 5. Jimbo Fisher

  • Florida State Seminoles (2010-17)
  • Texas A&M Aggies (2018-Present)

Another coach with two programs under his belt, Jimbo Fisher is still rebuilding Texas A&M. However, he won a ring with Florida State, and he was a part of many successful seasons in Tallahassee. Many will credit this with having Jameis Winston, but Fisher still did a lot with the Seminoles.

As an assistant, Fisher learned behind one of the best in Bobby Bowden. He certainly inherited a strong program with great recruiting ties and history, but he turned it into a yearly contender for a national title.

After five straight seasons with 10 or more wins, Fisher struggled in 2017. This was for many reasons, but one of them was certainly the fact that his quarterback went down against Alabama in the first game of the season. You can’t just cancel a season, but Fisher deserves a mulligan.

After that year, Fisher left Florida State to become the head coach of Texas A&M. The Aggies give Fisher a bigger platform for recruiting, but it also comes with higher expectations and competition in the SEC.

The Aggies went 9-4 in Fisher’s first year, but he managed to perform well in 2020. Still, the standard is not one good season that did not even end with a divisional title. Fisher will inevitably have to topple the top dogs in the SEC if he wants to bolster his legacy.

When you look at his overall resume, there are so many achievements in such a short amount of time. From his championship to coaching a Heisman Trophy winner, Fisher has done it all. Expect him to do even more for the Aggies in the coming years.
