Best college football coaches of 21st century: 19. Kirby Smart

  • Georgia Bulldogs (2016-Present)

Kirby Smart inherited a strong program in Georgia when he decided to go back to his alma mater and be the head coach. Smart learned a lot about building a program as Nick Saban’s defensive coordinator.

As soon as Smart joined with Georgia, they became a recruiting powerhouse. Nick Saban has always been known for his recruiting abilities, and Smart learned from him. At the end of his tenure with the Crimson Tide, he was the lead recruiter and he carried a lot of those Alabama pipelines to Athens.

Smart only has a few seasons under his belt, but he has already achieved a lot. In just his second season, he led the Bulldogs to the National Championship game that ended in an overtime defeat. They had a chance to make it back to the College Football Playoff in 2018, but Georgia lost to Alabama in the SEC Championship.

There becomes a point where you have to ask yourself how successful Smart can be at Georgia with Saban at Alabama. Saban has never lost a game to a former assistant, and he’s already bested Smart multiple times. However, Georgia has carried leads for most of the time in their first. two meetings. The Bulldogs are talented enough to beat Alabama, but it just never seems to happen.

With only three years under his belt, there is certainly time for Smart to shoot up these rankings. He seems happy at Georgia, and he is expected to be there for the rest of his career. If he ends up coaching the Bulldogs for 20 or more seasons, he will certainly have an extensive resume.

We will have to see what Georgia can do in this season. the near future. They are always near the top, but they have to get over the hump.

No matter what happens, Georgia is set up for years to come with Smart as their head coach.
